Statement
Barnaba’s work explores the isolating and dynamic emotions and experiences of mental illness and body image, specifically anorexia and the trauma of restrictive eating. Her paintings expose the all-consuming battle experienced by those with eating disorders. Her personal struggle comes as her source of inspiration, with each painting being a product of impacting experience, feeling, thought, or moment in her struggle with restrictive eating disorders and body dysmorphia.
“I hope when standing in front of my work they feel seen- that my brushstrokes and writing can be the scream we all want to let out when looking in the mirror. No one can truly know the pain of suffering from these disorders, and pray fewer people will. but if my work can expose just a fraction of the suffering for a moment to start a discussion, that’s enough.”
